In contrast the same file on the still very powerful 14-inch MacBook Pro (running an M1 Pro processor with 32GB of unified memory) took 24 minutes for the same task. A 34 second 8K video exported as a 16GB file in just 24 seconds. Then when you want to export said file, it takes relatively little time.
But no, the M1 Ultra with all that memory handles it smoothly, as if you've only asked it to do some simple task. Skimming through 8K preview files in Final Cut Pro, or a timeline with multiple 8K video streams stacked on top of each other, and you'd assume there'd be lots of frames dropping, stuttering and choking. It's also not upgradeable after the fact, so once you've locked in that order, that's it, you can't add in more memory or anything else internally.īut put into real-world terms the effortlessness with which the Studio can handle really high resolution, high bitrate files is simply staggering. The stats soon become mind-boggling (as does the pricing): the standard £3999/$3999/€4599 price tag jumps by a further £1000/$1000/€1150 for the processor upgrade, an additional £800/$800/€920 for the memory, and £400/$400/€460.

That's a device that Apple was keen to point out at its March 2022 ' Peek Performance' event was still coming (we're expecting a June WWDC announcement) and given that it should be even more powerful - we know, right, how? - you might want to wait to see what that offers, especially if you're at the top-end of the Mac Studio offering and looking for, well, superpowers. It is also worth noting that Apple is still to release a Mac Pro with Apple silicon inside. The Mac Studio is clearly a replacement for the iMac Pro or standard 27-inch iMac, which are now both discontinued, but with the added benefit of being able to customise your display options - and add on a Studio Display if you're feeling especially flush. However, if you are dealing with big files - and we mean seriously big files - day in day out then this is going to service those needs. It's the most powerful Mac we've ever tested. For most people the Mac Studio is going to be overkill.
